Do yourself a favor, and read this book.

I cried my way through it; there is no other way to describe Backman’s writing other than emotion that you feel with your entire body. Each sentence of his is like a poem in and of itself, and when put together, this book is a masterpiece. I’d be lucky to have one resonating quote in a lifetime of writing, but he has them page after page, and it is these sorts of quotes that I use as the spark to fuel my writing.
Check out a few of them below (and read them all – you’ll thank me later):
My favorite of the above? It changes, depending on my mood, but as I write this, it’s:
” … I think you’ve both given each other the same amount: everything that you had.”
My Friends, by Fredrik Backman
Let that sit for a minute.
And now read this slowly: All that we give is all that we have. The weight of expectations can be a crippling burden for both those who struggle to live up to someone’s expectations, as well as those whose expectations are never met. Probably a life lesson if you feel like the people around you are falling short; all that we give is all that we have.
A few other favorites of mine, depending on my mood and circumstance:
- “She just needs to be able to fall apart in peace.” (When I am overwhelmed.)
- “I only want to be who I really am … with you.” (When I am sentimental or nostalgic.)
- ” … they still fantasized about all the things that could happen instead of regretting all the things that never did.” (When I am contemplative.)
- “The most dangerous place on earth is inside us.” (When I am depressed.)
Each quote is an entire emotion, and representative of the writing that will move you to tears. Go get yourself a copy. Hard-copy, eCopy, audio, it doesn’t matter. Run, don’t walk. You won’t regret it.
My rating for My Friends, by Fredrik Backman: 5 ⭐️’s
